Dumb Weight Loss Thing: Exercise at your desk.

It was 1999 when I first made any effort to learn about any aspect of weight loss, nutrition, exercise and really just diet and fitness in general. Since that time, I’ve heard/read/seen some REALLY dumb things. Here now is one of those things…

Dumb Weight Loss Thing #8,304:

That you can workout at your desk.

Seriously, how many “5 simple exercises you can do while sitting at your desk at work” articles can one human being read before they never want to read ANY article of ANY kind EVER again.

Yes, I know that a lot of the people who want to lose weight and get in shape happen to spend most of their days sitting in a chair in an office and are just looking to make the best of this situation. I understand.

But, come on… “20 butt clenches” every half hour is not going to make any real significant difference. In fact, it’s not even going to make half of a real significant difference. In fact, the only real difference “20 butt clenches” will make is causing your co-workers to think you may have crapped your pants.

If you really want to make something real happen, make time for a real workout routine. None of the exercises I’ve seen in any of these crazy “how to exercise at your desk” articles are enough to make anything happen. Something as simple as going to bed at 10:30 instead of 11:00 and then waking up 6:00 instead of 6:30 is all it takes to get a REALLY REAL 30 minute workout in before you even get to work.

If you sit down and think about it and make a real effort, there are probably a dozen (or a few dozen) other ways you can rearrange your own personal daily/weekly schedule that will allow you to make time for real workouts. Whether it’s at a gym, inside your house, or just walking/jogging around your block… EVERYONE can make time for at least 3 or 4 real workouts a week.

Anyone who claims they can’t just isn’t trying hard enough. To you people, I have this message… we will all be laughing at you when you do your butt clenches.

This has been Dumb Weight Loss Thing #8,304.

I know you are supposed to go to the gym [or you can do it at home, etc.] to lose weight, and I’ve tried, I swear I have. I would feel craptastic and loserly when I didn’t go, and I never particularly liked it when I did, either.

But as someone who has finally accepted my extreme DISTASTE for all things ‘work-out’ related, I don’t feel bad for not going anymore. I found activities that I love (dancing and mountain bike riding) and have never been happier.

Granted, it isn’t realistic to do these activities every day like you can with a ‘workout’ but I actually look forward to them.

Update: I have now lost 50 pounds total AND I weigh LESS than my husband.

I love this this blog and it’s good to know I’m not the only one struggling with the exercise issue. You have all motivated me to get up from my desk (and my butt clenching exercises) and take a walk. Thank you!

I think “The lose weight diet” is great! I read everything on your side;even though, I was skeptical at the beginning:-) You put each step of loosing weight in the proper order, and you kept me interested with your narration full of irony!:-))) about another diets and crazy ideas”how to exercise at your desk”. I am 140 pounds and 5 feet tall. When I came to United States, I was 110-115. If I think about me at that time, I struggled with weight at that point too, but I had control over my cravings. However, every year is getting worse, and I almost don’t buy any clothes because I know that I will never fit in anything what I wish to wear. So I decided that I want be the same girl again, but I didn’t know how to start.
Your side gave me hope:-)) Thank you.

Hi, I just found this website and this diet sounds great. Im 19 years old and I weight 165 pounds…I used to weight 110 two years ago. I really dont know what happened but now I’m trying to get back to normal. I am fine with counting the calories however I am concerned about the amount of exercise that needs to be done. I work out 3 times a week for an hour. Im just wondering if I should be working out more than that?

I too have just discovered your site and think it is fantastic. Trying to lose weight at the age of 47 has been pretty tough but the information on your pages is very, very helpful and so down-to-earth.

    Thank you …
